When Riley showed up in the small town of Hawesville, KY, she was looking for a place to hide. Running from her abusive husband; Brian, the close-knit community charm convinced her to stay. Before she knew it, she was building a new life for herself while struggling to keep her past hidden. The townspeople were curious about her, but she was determined to keep from forming any real relationships. Reluctantly, she finds herself falling for the town’s most eligible bachelor, Sam Harper.
One day as Sam was having lunch, he noticed a new face in the diner. She was sad and alone, and there was something about her that called to him. After giving her a job, a place to stay, and after a lot of kindness and patience, he was finally starting to break down the barrier that Riley had put up around herself.
Riley was starting to believe that she was finally free, that Brian wouldn’t find her in the small town, and that she could start thinking about her future.
But neither Sam nor Riley were prepared to learn the truth about Brian. And when HE finds her…she will be sorry.
My Goodreads Review
There’s something truly intriguing and exciting about someone starting over in a new town where they don’t know a single soul. I love that kind of adventure and definitely love reading – and living vicariously through – that kind of story. This story is about a damaged woman on the run looking for a fresh start. She’s traveling all over the country on a bus looking for a new place to call home. She settles on a small town and everything seems to fall into place effortlessly once she settles in.
The romantic elements are sweet and well written. The author wasn’t too cheesy or overly zealous with the romance. It was enough to keep you reading more but not too much that you were bored or overwhelmed with the unrealistic romantic prose. Sam, the love interest, is a likable character who I instantly rooted for. Riley, the leading woman, instantly tugs at your heartstrings. I found myself rooting for the couple immediately.
The suspense element of the story was riveting and kept me interested and wanting more. There is a psychological twist that is revealed at the end that kept things interesting.
This novel has a happy ending and everything gets nicely wrapped up which I thought was appropriate. I closed the book with happy feelings and without any unresolved questions.
If you are looking for a romantic, suspenseful read that ends well for everyone this is a great choice.
